Panicum virgatum was one of the major grasses in the Tall Grass prairie of North America. These prairie grasses have more than good looks; they are also tough and functional. The hazey flowering effect gives a light airiness in the garden. The slender, light green foliage mounds develop quickly into sizeable specimens. Their deep, fibrous root systems also help them tolerate poor soils and drought and they require no fertilizer making them a low maintenance and attractive garden worthy addition. In Autumn the foliage takes on butterscotch coloured tones before heading into its Winter dormancy.
